Dr. Dr. Arhold performs all surgical procedures: tooth and wisdom tooth extractions, root tip resections, surgical cleaning of gingival pockets in periodontitis therapy, surgical removal of cysts and abscesses, sinus operations (e.g. in case of chronic sinus infections), tooth and bone transplantations, bone augmentation, upper jaw sinus lift – and of course, implantations.
Dental implants
Dental implants are an option for almost every patient with missing teeth. The tried-and-tested procedure involves the surgical placement of titanium tooth roots in the jaw bone. After a period of healing, the implants can support crowns or bridges, or they can serve as retaining elements for removable dentures. Implant-anchored dental restorations function and feel like natural teeth. There are many viable solutions to close gaps in the tooth arch, ranging from tooth-by-tooth implantation to only a few implants that support bridges or offer attachment sites for removable dentures.
Jaw bone augmentation
Implantation procedures can be relatively straightforward when there is enough jaw bone available to securely place the implant. However, with insufficient height, width and/or density of the jaw bone, things get a little more complicated. Loss of jaw bone is the inevitable consequence of longer periods of toothlessness (removable dentures further aggravate shrinkage of the alveolar ridge), and it is caused by late stage periodontitis and periimplantitis. But even patients with shrunken jaws don’t have to forgo implant therapy: In cases of substantial bone loss, modern oral surgery can resort to a number of bone augmentation and rebuilding methods.
Please be advised, though, that this kind of advanced implant therapy takes a considerable amount of time and technical effort… and it will cost more, too. Grafting bone meal or artificial bone-like material to the jaw bone, bone spreading, bone elongation, elevating the floor of the sinus cavity by a sinus lift procedure, or bone transplantation are modern surgical methods that achieve good results even for advanced bone loss. Extensive bone augmentation measures must be completed prior to implantation. That means a several months healing period before the implants can be placed. Smaller augmentations will be performed at the same time as the implantation.
